| L. Tyrannic |
Bio: L. Tyrannic is 1/3rd of a hip hop trio called MagnumOpis. The members of this group are Mengosh, Born Prince and L. Tyrannic. The trio met in their early teenage years while attending a boarding school for “bad kids”. It was at the boarding school where the trio immediately developed a friendship strengthened by strong overtones stemming from a love of hip-hop. It was not a coincidence that all three members of MagnumOpis hailed from the same West Philadelphia section and never met, at least not until fate forced them to unite under otherwise undesirable, and seemingly hopeless circumstances. Ever since their acquaintance at boarding school, the trio has been making hip-hop music together, - all the while attempting to keep hip-hop innovative and pure with a strong emphasis on lyrical content. According to “L.”, creating and reciting rhymes acapella with his new found crew “MagnumOpis”, -“it really made the time in school go by fast”. Before long, all three members of MagnumOpis were dismissed from boarding school. Almost immediately following their dismissal, “the trio” decided to leave the Philly streets in pursuit of an education from Del. State.
Through a natural progression of life, people engage in new relationships. It was also through this “natural progression of life” that L. Tyrannic came to be a member of the “Pyro-Techz”.
While on spring break from college L. Tyrannic came home for a visit at which time he was contacted by “Bolo” a member of the “Pyro-Techz”, who was also a long-time and childhood friend of “L’s”. Bolo explained to “L” that, “the “Pyro-Techz” is a production company that gives serious artist a chance to develop into professionally groomed protégés’”. “Bolo” then told L. Tyrannic that the “Pyro-Techz” was developing their second album entitled “The Apprenticeship II” (a follow up to their successful freshman album compilation “The Apprenticeship”, -which gave the “Pyro-Techz” a heavy “street buzz”). L. Tyrannic came to “The Foundation” recording studio where he met “Tech-1” and laid down his first track produced by “Chaos” called the “Wrecking Machine”. The rest is hip-hop history.
L. Tyrannic has performed at many events in Philly. He has also participated in numerous MC battles within the local tri-state area’s underground circuit. | Move.meant |
Members: Spider (dj/producer), JB (producer/drummer), and Champ (mc/producer)
Bio: The Los Angeles based crew evolved shortly after Spider (dj/producer) introduced longtime friend JB (producer/drummer) to Sonoma State classmate, Champ (mc/producer). The chemistry between the three was instantly obvious and they began recording immediately. Since then, the trio has spent endless hours in the studio experimenting and perfecting their sound.
JB's production is the foundation of move.meant's style. Unlike the cookie-cutter beats provided by many of today's producers, JB's instrumentals cover the entire spectrum, setting the backdrop for a well balanced sound. He manages to craft all types of rhythms, but maintains a distinct style, leaving his mark on each one without being predictable.
Likewise, Champ's lyrics are all over the board, from battle rhymes to stories, from socially and politically conscious to anecdotal. Influenced by the likes of legends and innovators such as Public Enemy, Tribe, and Common, his style is both positive and introspective.
Spider's cuts compliment the beats and rhymes perfectly. His knack for finding and utilizing sounds and samples with such creativity completes the puzzle, resulting in unmistakably pure hip-hop with a unique style.
But what makes move.meant special is how their approach in the studio carries over to their live show. Instead of just spinning instrumentals and rhyming over them like traditional hip hop groups or performing with an entire live band like most of the rest, move.meant rocks shows with a different flavor. While JB plays the beats on an electronic drum kit linked to an MPC2000 sampler, Champ controls the crowd through call-and-response and poignant rhymes. Spider adds that raw element to a seamlessly organized set with creative turntablism, allowing the group to improvise and give programmed beats a live feel.
In 2003, move.meant successfully released its first single on vinyl, The Rebirth b/w Heather, and debut CD, the move.meant ep, on its own Wax Paper Records. Both were well received by the hip-hop community and are seeing regular radio play and rave reviews. The group is set to release another 12" soon, followed by the brand new full length album, Mass Transmit.

| Qualo |
Members: Shawndell -"Chicago Shawn"Lewis, Kenneth "Optimyst-" Bayliss, Trevel "Preast-" Ruffer, and Olusola "Shala Esquire" Akintunde
Bio: Qualo (pronounced Kway-lo), the Chicago underground legends, exhibit a unique sound that is rapidly growing into the soundtrack of the Midwest Revolution. Often using catchy hooks, street chants and soul-influenced choruses as tools for enrapturing any audience, the group of four fully personify their name. Formally known as-"Qualoheem"-, a name meaning "-four (Qua) ethereal or angelic beings (eloheem)", the entity heightens one's curiosity and lures listeners into the group's vast episodic encounters. Their unique musical blend of classic street doctrine, spiritual sincerity, humor and urban poetic commentary often brings those who feel disenfranchised and outcasted, typical street cats,-"hip hop heads"- and the electronic sub-culture movement to the same place; all claiming exclusive rights to the sound. Reigning from Chicago and the same crew that brought you the talents of Twista, Do or Die, and Crucial Conflict (although still possessing a mild East coast influence), these four distinct lyricists/ producers possess a synergy and rhythm that has listeners bouncing in excitement one minute and rolling in emotion the next; even simultaneously, at times. Their musical reach is wide and addictive. The four come together with an energy similar to the heydays of the Wu Tang Clan and other hip hop crews. Bottomline.... a definite franchise...
Shawndell -"Chicago Shawn"Lewis, is the intricate lyrical word-connector, he provides the innovative soulful musical production. Reminding one of the inventiveness and funky artistry of the 1970'-s, the catchy, innovative, bass-coated production is all original and usually mid-tempo (enough to move one to sweat at a club but still rattle car trunks when needed.). Kenneth "Optimyst-"Bayliss, dubbed "The Poetic Sorcerer-", commands a unique form of prose that hypnotically engages the listener in a one-on-one conversation similar to that of Andre 3000 of Outkast. Trevel "Preast-"Ruffer, a producer in his own right, brings the charisma and picturesque -lyrical depth- that is only seen with gifted writers like Nas, Jay Z and Tupac. The fourth, Olusola "-Shala Esquire" Akintunde, also a producer, helps oversee the production. As an artist, the Nigerian-American is the "revolutionary poet-" of the group; often adding a chant, rhyme or conclusive prose to a song; similar to the heydays of characters like Profeessor X the Overseer of X Clan and Flavor Flav of Public Enemy. Qualo, with their catchy new
sound and a live show that is unmatched, adds a few more coals to what has become the hip hop hotbed: the Midwest. (note: two of the biggest acts in hip hop are from the MIdwest; Nelly and Eminem. also see: Twista and Kanye West)
